DOWN THE DRAIN: HOW TO GET YOUR RING OUT OF THE SINK DRAIN

Have you ever encountered the nerve-wracking panic of a ring or other small item slipping off your finger and vanishing down the sink drain? It’s one of those moments where time appears to freeze as you witness your precious possession swiftly disappear into the depths of the plumbing system. Fortunately, if you take prompt action, there are several methods to retrieve the ring or any other lost item without requiring the assistance of a plumber – although we do recommend seeking professional help in certain circumstances. In this blog post, Narrow Path Plumbing will guide you through the necessary steps to address this unfortunate plumbing predicament and help pull you out of your sink drain drama.

Step 1

First, keep in mind that turning off the faucet and leaving it off until the ring or item is retrieved is the first step. This small action can make a big difference in keeping your ring in an area where you can still retrieve it. If you leave your faucet on and running, you run the risk of it getting flushed to the mainline, where it is irretrievable.

Step 2

To examine the drain, it may be necessary to remove the drain stopper (if applicable). If you encounter difficulty in removing the stopper, direct your attention to the pivot rod arm located beneath the sink. It will be connected to the sink’s drain pipe. This small metal rod can sometimes become bent or disconnected, hindering the proper movement of the stopper. To solve this, you can use a wrench or pair of pliers and cautiously grip the pivot rod arm to rotate and gently detach it. Once you have successfully loosened this segment of the pivot rod arm, try to remove the drain stopper from the sink again. At this point, it should come out easily, and you should be able to see down your sink drain.

Step 3

Have you ever heard of a Grabber Claw? This practical tool can greatly simplify the entire experience. This tool, equipped with four prongs, is specifically designed to fit into narrow spaces like a sink drain, enabling you to grasp and remove blockages efficiently. In our case, it has the potential to assist in retrieving your lost item. You should be able to find one at your convenience in any home improvement store. With a little patience and the assistance of a grabber claw, you may successfully resolve your sink drain predicament and reclaim your ring!

Alternate Step 3

Depending on what kind of item got dropped down the sink (meaning the material it is made out of), you might be able to use a telescoping magnetic wand to fish it out. These nifty wands are magnetic and extendable, so they come in handy when you’re in a bind like this. Plus, you should be able to get one at any home improvement store. Just remember, they won’t work for silver or gold rings or jewelry since those aren’t magnetic.

Alternate Step 3

If the previous method did not yield results or was not feasible, it is time to explore alternative solutions. If you have access to a shop vac, either through ownership or borrowing from a neighbor or friend, consider attaching a nylon stocking to the end of the nozzle. Although this approach may seem unconventional, the nylon stocking acts as a net, allowing for an innovative method of retrieving your ring. Securely attach the nylon stocking to the nozzle end, firmly hold the nozzle in place, position it to flush over the sink’s drain hole, and activate the vacuum. With some luck, the vacuum’s air pressure will draw the ring (or other item) upward, while the net on the nozzle prevents it from being sucked into the shop vac. Voilà!

Alternate Step 3

Are you still searching for solutions to retrieve your item? Let’s get straight to the point then. The P-trap plays a crucial role in maintaining the smooth operation of your plumbing system. This pipe, shaped like a “P” below your sink, is designed to hold water and prevent toxic sewer gas, such as methane, from entering your home. Additionally, the P-trap serves the dual purpose of containing stray items, similar to our current situation.

Before commencing the removal process, we recommend positioning a bucket or container directly beneath the P-trap’s location. This will facilitate the capture of any water, debris, and, hopefully, your lost item. Additionally, it may be advantageous to have some towels or rags readily available. Next, identify the slip nuts located at both ends of the P-trap and employ either pliers or a pipe wrench to loosen them. Once the slip nuts are sufficiently loosened, they should slide down the pipes, allowing for the careful extraction of the P-trap from the tailpiece (the sink’s vertical pipe) and the waste pipe (the horizontal pipe leading into the wall or floor). Be mindful and be prepared to empty the contents of the P-trap into the designated bucket, where you should locate your ring. Congratulations; you did it!

If you have successfully retrieved your ring or lost item, take a moment to commend yourself. That was quite a challenging situation, and you managed to overcome it. However, it is important to ensure that you securely return the P-trap to its original position, as well as the pivot rod arm and drain stopper. On the other hand, if you have not been able to retrieve the item, it can be difficult to determine when to stop trying. It is crucial to remember that plumbers are highly trained professionals who possess the expertise to handle even the most difficult plumbing issues. So, if your best efforts have proved unsuccessful, there’s no judgment here! We commend you for trying! And that’s why we’re here!
